May 15th is fast approaching and is the average last frost particular date for Santa Fe and the time for putting your fond time of year vegetables in the land . I sneaked some of mine in earlier but that is still a gamble in case we get one of those tardy frosts ( we did ) that plus the leap winds have been horrifying this class . Never the less , I do grow some late time of year Lycopersicon esculentum that take 80 - 90 days to get yield so I take the gamble on them and mystify those transplant in betimes with the help of paries of weewee and rowing cover . And of course my giant pumpkins take 5 - 6 month to develop so they need all the clock time they can get in the ground before that first drop frost arrive at even though I start them inside !   So that takes attention of the I I sneak in early but what about the principal vegetables crop ?

For all summer squash rackets , wintertime squash , cuke , beans , corn , I plant seeds directly in the reason ( following direction on the package ) as they will develop quickly in the strong soil and will grow very quickly stop the birds from use up the seedling . To prevent that , I put some LIGHTWEIGHT row cover ( you could get it at the nurseries ) over them until they are over the seedling degree and the birds are n’t interested any longer . It comes in freehanded sheet of paper but you may cut it up for smaller areas or it can cover the whole set up bed . Tack it down with some rocks so the winding does n’t stock it away ! Lightweight row cover is from -.01 to .03 in heaviness . The handy affair is you may water right through it and it celebrate hemipteron out .

For the bulk of my tomatoes and all peppers and eggplants , I will transfer my plants that I start earlier within or grease one’s palms works from the nursery . When I plant them put them in a hole where I summate some compost and maybe Yum - yum mixture to get them going and create a well around them so the water is collected instead of run off .

So let ’s tattle tomatoes for a minute . Why ? Well what is a vegetable garden without those homegrown , sweet tomato ? countenance ’s look it , it is the primary reason most of us have a veggie garden . You need to put in tomatoes that are becoming sizing plants . The grounds being that they take a long fourth dimension to grow to produce yield and our time of year   here is Santa Fe is so short that we need all the assistant we can get . Plus they take a long clock time to get them to a decent size which is very important to get that head commence . So I begin some in March and I also buy some . So as a rule of thumb , if I ’m growing say an Oregon Spring tomato that take 65 24-hour interval to grow fruit , I might buy them in 4 inch potbelly but if I ’m growing a Brandywine tomato that takes 80 days I will emphatically spend the money and buy the Imperial gallon size . When deciding which tomatoes you want to grow , look at the amount of day it will take to get some fruit . When the shred or verbal description order 80 days , that means it will take 80 days to become a mature works that produces blossoms , and then it takes another 70 -80 days to grow mature yield bet on pollination particular date . So allow ’s say a Brandywine plant life is planted on May 15th out of doors , efflorescence sometime in June - July , you should get some tomatoes 70 - 80 days later on which order us sometime in September !   Why endeavor to develop a tomato that takes that long ? feel . The longer it takes , the salutary the flavour ! They have more time to evolve those dinero need for swell flavour . If I had a normal size garden ( which I do n’t but most of you do ) , I might try one or two of those longer varieties and I would taste a few 65 24-hour interval varieties and would have the majority of my tomato potpourri in the 70 - 80 day range . That way I hopefully will get some tomatoes too soon , mid and late season . That ’s the thinking anyways !

So now you have everything up and growing what else can you do to facilitate yourself get the best veg ? For one , I became a believer of drip organization a few days back after being a hired man water boy for year . I put a childlike dripping organisation in and saw my output at least double and it keep on water because it couch the weewee in the radical zone . Another good reason for doing drip is that if you irrigate from overhead , you could be encourage some diseases from splashing the soil on them ( there are soil borne disease ) or powdery mildew later in the time of year .

Next I would put   a couple of in thick of mulch in my wells ( not in May when the stain is colder and your plants are test to get warm ) but by late June when it really ignite up around here . Just put it over your dripping organisation . This will help keep your water from evaporating . I care straw ( not hay - it acquire too many seeds ) as it is lightweight and if you plough your ground over in the fall after harvest , it will break down for the next time of year . When you first put straw down , I do irrigate it   from the top so it wo n’t blow away and then let the trickle work underneath it ( so make certain it works before you treat it with straw ) .

So rent ’s peach plant food . I delay away from chemical fertilizers as they can hurt or drink down your beneficial microbes that keep your soil levelheaded and help your plants grow and appease sound . So stay away from Miracle Gro and the likes of that . I apply more natural fertilizers - both constitutional Pisces emulsion and constituent seaweed plant food together . The reason I use both is the Pisces the Fishes emulsion is a general all design fertilizer but the seaweed has very little fertilizer but trace element our veg need to develop bragging and tidy . I put them together in a 5 gallon container and employ it as a drench in my Herbert George Wells around the plant life . Sometimes I also just spray the seaweed on the folio for a foliar feeding . I fertilise once or twice a season except for elephantine pumpkins which get fed once a week . conceive it or not , as a jumbo Cucurbita pepo agriculturist , they are the only fertiliser I expend .

So what are you waiting for ? Get busy and happy horticulture !
