Milagro and Rio , the strawberry killers .
Early last summer , my roommate Lisa institute a garden . Using four of the large terra cotta pots that were sitting empty on my patio , she bulge pepper , tomatoesandstrawberries . She diligentlywateredthe seedlings every day and , before long , the brilliant California sun brought forth levelheaded , happy , full - arise plants .
But then , one night , tragedy come to . Someone forgot to latch the gate to Milagro ’s booth , and in the middle of the dark , he got out . He made a beeline for the back lawn , but on the agency , he stopped at Lisa ’s potted garden . He snub the tomato and the peppers , but the strawberry plants were not so lucky .
In the morning time , I retrieve Milagro jubilantly crease on the lawn . Lisa ’s strawberry plants were demolished . Not eaten , listen you ; just torn out by their base and befuddle around the terrace . Needless to say , Lisa did not get strawberries that yr .
This summer , Lisa start her garden once again : She tend to it with great care , being indisputable to water it every Clarence Day , and the plants originate quickly . justly now , the tomato industrial plant has lots of small yellow heyday where tomato will soon show . The peppercorn plant has little green peppers dangling from the leaves . And the strawberry mark plant has handsome , bright - green leaves . At least it hassomebright - green leaves . A number of those leaves were decimated , this meter byRio , who get away from his cubicle the other night .
The crime was find few break of day ago , when I receive up to find Rio grazing on the back lawn . On the terrace nearby , a handful of Lisa ’s naked hemangioma simplex plants were wilting in the sunshine ; they had been snap out by the root . Not eaten , just ripped out and discard aside .
What is it withSpanish Mustangsand strawberries ? Is it that the industrial plant smells good , but once the horses get into the mouth , they resolve they do n’t like the taste ? And why do n’t they attack the tomatoes and the black pepper , but only the strawberry plants ?
I suspect this will remain an unsolved mystery for many year to get . Meanwhile , everyone in the household is now adjudicate to be diligent about keeping the stalling doors latched , for the interest of Lisa ’s strawberries .
