My dome turn in Bob and Karen ’s backyard .

Around here , book club is the privileged circle , the first web to consult for advice on nearly anything : electrician , schooling circuit board candidate , pie Earth’s crust . Ours ( The Salem Witches ) is fluid but committed ; there ’s always a quorum of very overbold women with a list of tremendous indication suggestion . So that ’s whom I first turn to when I miss my dear 8- by 16 - foot vegetable garden — the one I had had to give up when I moved to my current neighborhood .

The book club was the place to get down looking for an challenging gardener that bit off more than she could masticate : an old neighbour , who could no longer flex and pull off the weeds , or local empty nesters , who had moved onto other hobbies . I could make a winnings - win situation from their under - used garden plot of ground .

Early planting before we installed the new fence .

I had several crack . blaze , yes . Come mightily over , Karen said . imbed a hill or 2 of squash , a tipi of edible bean and a few love apple . That ’s how I became a cropper ( or ayard sharer ) , cuckold into her backyard quietly to tie up my few plants . If I ’m away , she and her hubby weewee for me and are complimentary to eat the bonce or cut back the zinnias when they are ready . We partake the Chinese parsley and any excess basil . Lucky me . This year Karen and Bob even took a few Tree down and re - did the deer fencing so all our crop are shaking their little plant shoulders and send out bright green thank you leaves now .

Bean plants

My beans growing in Bob and Karen’s backyard.

It ’s pretty arduous to determine which vegetables savour the most unlike when they come straight from my portion - crop strip of garden . Tomatoes , duh , but zucchini too ; thin - surround peppers are right smart better and certainly draw bonce taste like a unlike animal ( so to speak ) . These really surprised me after rise up strictly with frozen ones .

My favorite affair to make with those home - grown ( well , Karen ’s home anyway ) edible bean is a salade nicoise , the touch “ composed ” salad in the style of Nice , France . It ’s a andiron - days - meal - in - a - bowl salad and the best part is that you could make the components separately and then “ compose ” the salad when you ’re quick to rust .

So , before it gets really swelter in your kitchen , slice ( they cook faster that direction ) and boil a dyad of secure - sized Solanum tuberosum and an nut per eater in the same mountain . scandalise them both in cold water , peel the testis and put both in the electric refrigerator . Same thing with the green beans — mabye cut them in two if they are long . you may even put a steamer basket above the egg and potato to be a really efficient cook .

Now , at mealtime , layer some goodlettucein a big bowlful . set the cold Solanum tuberosum , slice heavily - roil eggs , the string beans , cerise tomatoes and some canned , drained chickpea on top . If you were smart enough to grill an surplus piece of any thick Pisces the night before , flake it up and put it on the lettuce , too , but a can or two of oil - pack tunny is also honest to the recipe . Now strew it all with some chopped herbs ( basil , tarragon , Petroselinum crispum ) , some capers and black olives , a few anchovy . The best dressing for a sallet nicoise is a simple vinaigrette of salt , pepper , Indian mustard , olive oil colour and wine acetum . Do n’t scrimp on the dressing .

Ta - dah ! Chow down .
