While best known for her expertise on Department of the Interior , Needleman is also an extremely capable gardener . At a   commonwealth house she owns with her married man , Jacob Weisberg , in Garrison , New York , she transform what had been three sloping , weed - cover acres into a serial publication of bed in a style that might best be draw as Country   Italian . It is organized brightly in the same well-disposed mode Needleman does her indoor spaces . GARDEN DESIGN asked her to describe the philosophical system behind her backyard , with its delightful play of simplicity and surprise .

What is your idea of the “ perfectly frail ” garden ?

DN : It ’s a garden that puts you at ease . The principles are the same whether you ’re outdoors or indoors — you want space that are inspiring , calming , and comfortable — nice places to hang out , run through , rest , and chat . When I hear hoi polloi pertain to “ plant material ” and “ hardscaping , ” two words I hate , I know they wo n’t make gardens I love because they ’re talking about cloth rather than the point of it all .

How did your garden come together ?

DN : I got a circumstances of advice from friends and was inspired by traveling and interpretation . I wanted to create a sense of magic . I enjoy courtly French and Italian garden , topographic point likeVilla Gamberaia[overlooking Florence ] that are almost entirely green and full of strict geometry . But that would look ostentatious and uptight in my small garden , so I ’ve gone about blurring the straight edges , messing things up .

Where did you take off ?

DN : I was in my Italianophile stage , and so I terraced everything with dry - lay endocarp walls , separating the front walkway , the pool , and the eating area into different country . Then I added hedging and a box parterre on either side of the front door . It was overly formal until it got establish and decorate up . The vegetable garden follow after my kids were born because I think it would be fun for them . It requires a farcical amount of meter and labor and money considering how easy it is to give away at the farmer ’s marketplace . And yet , I ’d never give it up . I ’m addicted .

How does the interior decorating spill into the garden ?

DN : Everyone gets it about the motivation to make “ room ” or structure in the garden . But we also need to decorate those rooms ! If you discontinue at prime and a garden work bench that no one ever sits on , it might look pretty , but it wo n’t be a place where any life happens . A stack of what makes you comfy inside is worth exporting into the garden : indulgent seat cushion , pillows on the back of chairs , broken tables where you’re able to set a crapulence or rule book . There is nothing better than throw a big white linen cloth over a mesa under a tree , bringing out your good silver and spyglass , and bear a long dejeuner . Using your indoor finery out of doors , from time to time , makes the experience more memorable and magical , probably because it is so airy .

Are you against out-of-door furniture ?

DN : No , of course not , but a lot of out-of-door fabric feel so stiff , and the pillow are stuffed so full they ’re hard as bullets . Hollywood at Homehas a line of beautiful all - weather fabric that looks and palpate like linen paper .

How do you contribute nature into the house ?

DN : I fuck reminders of the garden inside — a big potted oleander say summer in Italy ; a winter - flowering jasmine reminds me that spring will come . What joy does a spider flora , that lasts 20 long time , offer ? Garden plants indoors are treasured because they do n’t last long — like the pleasures of the garden , they are momentary .

You ’ve worked with some very far-famed decorators . What antic have you learned ?

DN : That easy light is more flattering than verbatim overhead light , and so the more you may moderate and dapple sunlight , the better for everyone . It is on-key at dark too — candlelight make the great unwashed find frothy and glamourous . Votives and hurricane lantern are essential inside and out .

Also , when mixing a crowd of prints , contrast their weighing machine and plug in them with color . For illustration , on the pergola , I have a big flower print , a lilliputian stripe , and a sheer stripes . You see stripes and florals together in a heap of great English room ; why not use that combination alfresco ? These fabrics take care right together because they all have some brownish blue on them .

What ’s your favorite quick localization in the garden ?

DN : The same direction that compost muddle every soil inauspicious , I think boxwood fixes every garden sick ! If your garden is messy or has holes or the flowers look all disorderly and confused , shed some Turkish boxwood ball in and it will look not bad and purposeful .

What is the garden equivalent of good sure-enough silver grey ?

DN : It bet on where you last , but for me it’sgravel . I judge it is about my erotic love of sublime Italian and Gallic garden , but when there is Harlan Fiske Stone underfoot , it sounds so nifty and look so elegant .

How often do you entertain in the garden ?

DN : In summer , we eat outdoors as much as potential . If you set everything up , it ’s not even like entertaining ; you are just make big pots of solid food for everyone who is around .

I wish to be in a garden — not just to attend at it . I find that the more kinds of things you may do in a place , the more alive it seems . I stick chair anywhere that seems hospitable to them . I even have them in the vegetable garden so that someone can halt by for a visit or you could have drink there before dinner .

Do you need a spot of frippery alfresco as well ?

DN : A fleck of surprise is so fantastic . That ’s why pendant are so delightful outdoors , because they do n’t go there . It is ompletely derisory but sometimes we drag the carpet and all of the pillow from the seance room onto the lawn and have a picnic under a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . It ’s as if we were Yves St. Laurent in Marrakech in the ’ 60 or something .

What ’s the “ perfectly imperfect ” plant life ?

DN : I like plants that count a footling wild growing together . I ’m crazy for howPiet Oudolfcombines industrial plant . I do a formula to get his look — prime bloom ( like echinacea ) meld with spire ( like foxgloves or veronicastrum ) mixed with umbelliferous plant ( like phlox or Joe Pye Weed ) . Weedy plant like grasses or gaura finish the private garden expression . Then if you bring a little structure , like a hedge , it let you rip off the wildness because it looks like you have it all pulled together .

Any thoughts on peter ?

DN : Everything that is functional should also be pretty ! If you trouble to make a nice garden , you might as well manage about the smell of the thing that lay around in it . I corrupt nice woven baskets for weed and hive away stakes whenever I see them , simple Dutch wood tool fromSneeboer , and plant labels fromLe Prince Jardinier . If you ’re inParis , Deyrolle , the famous taxidermy workshop , carries Le Prince Jardiner and is unquestionably worth a sojourn .

What do you wear to garden ?

DN : In my head , I am wearing a pretty flowered dress and belted cardigan and wellies . In truth , I work barefoot , no mitt , and usually in my bathing suit . I definitely have nothing to tender the style reality here .
