This garden is a hidden gem that includes a parterre, a colonnade, and a temple of love
Nemours Estate , once the country home of Alfred I. duPont , is place on 300 demesne in Wilmington , Delaware . Both the mansion and the beautifully interpreted formal French gardens that beleaguer it were designed in the other twentieth century by the geological era ’s salient architecture firm , Carrere - Hastings . While other duPont gardens have some Gallic influence , French invention elements are carried throughout the entire garden at Nemours . From planting invention to ornate stonework and everything in between , the French garden way is everywhere .
Nemours’ planting design is tidy and formal
Geometric shape play an significant part in Gallic garden conception . At Nemours Estate , the parterre garden represent the role of light sharpness , with Turkish boxwood hedges surrounding and defining each layer and curved scroll . In the gardens near to the menage , down hedges are used to surround color blocks of annuals and flowering medulla . The Four Borders garden is loosely planted , but each bed is contained by a brusk , neatly sheared hedging . Tuteurs stress the relaxed combination of yearly , perennial , and shrub . Pea gravel paths square separate the four bed , with a manicured lawn in the center . A very older linden tree allee leads guests away from the formal gardens into a timberland garden .
Stonework and statuary keep the classical French theme going
Ornate and often monumental stonework and statuary are quintessential elements of a French formal garden . Front the front of the house , the garden thought includes the Vista or Long Walk , an enormous think over pool , a snarl garden , and a massive colonnade . On the other side and below the colonnade , the Sunken Garden includes several elaborate fountain with a stretch of lawn and a small coil garden in center . Finally , the Love Temple finish the long stint of classical French architectural element . The turgid lawn in front of the synagogue is flank by large beds filled with colorful canna lilies .
Container plantings also evoke Old World style
While Nemours does not have a topiary garden , it does have wads of trees potted in cylindric Sir Henry Joseph Wood and iron containers in true French fashion . embayment award and stinker and orange tree sheared into round topiaries sprinkle the gravel paths throughout the garden . Enormous cementum urns model atop the planetary house balustrade , on tugboat bordering the Vista and roost above the Sunken Garden . In other areas , pots containing annuals are thoughtfully placed in group .
Order and balance lead the figure of Nemours Estate , demonstrating the symmetricalness for which French gardens are known . Guests will experience true French design while visiting this public garden .
