July Blues.
Cathy atRamblinginthegardenshares my sadness at the loss of her splendid June rose . Even at Sissinghurst Vita feel the same kind of letdown that I do now that July is here:‘There are some moments when I finger pleased with my garden , and other moments when I despair . The proud of moments normally materialise in outpouring , and last up to the middle of June . By that time all the freshness has live off ; everything has become heavy ; everything has lose that adolescent tone , that look of astonishment at its own youth . The middle aged spread has begun . ’Vita Sackville West .
I would say that the glow lasts until the remnant of June . It ’s not that there is no colour in the garden in July ; there is plenty , but somehow it is just not as exciting . Everything seems to have middle age cattle ranch . As the month perish on daisy case flowers take over- they are pretty but not precisely heart- stopping .
It doesn ’ t aid that we had no rain for years and it has been quite spicy the last couple of days . The plant have let themselves go . Dead head helps though and this morning we did get a spot of rainfall so I have been out tidy up and trying to find reasons to love the July garden . Once the cheerless brown brain are chopped off the rosiness they depend better . Unfortunately , I did a piece of cross pollenate in June to see if I could engender some beautiful new roses . I marked them with coloured wool after cautiously noting them in my notebook . Whoops , I have merrily hack all their heads off . But at least they look goodish . Peonies , aquilegias and Sisyrinchium striatumall look much well with a short back and sides . Everything looks less middle cured and tired now and I realise that there is lots of colour but is there anything to get aroused about ? Anything special ? Well , how about a lily ? My favourite at the here and now is the dazzling , deep scarlet , almost pitch-black ‘ Night Flyer ’ . It is so sumptuous and it comes back each year unlike some lily which peter out . If I could only have one lily in the garden this would be the one I would pick out . So yes , I do get excited about lily and there are more to total . I ca n’t remember the name of this red one which I have had for old age and it number back each year to storm me . it ’s not as gorgeous as ‘ Night handbill ’ but nevertheless it is a pretty tad of loss .

The Turk ’ s Cap lily : Lilium martagonis a beautiful woodlander which also lasts for year and step by step spreads . It shines out like a beacon light under the Tree . My father always had it in his garden and this is where mine issue forth from .
Another sensational industrial plant in bloom at the moment is a gorgeousDiascia personatawhich I bought at Hampton Court Flower Show last class . UnlikeDiascia rigiscenswhich dies every wintertime this has survived and is magnificent . It is huge ; 3 metrical unit magniloquent and I cerebrate it calculate tremendous with its neighbourStipa gigantea . Next class I hope to have this plant all the way down the border if I can get cuttings to take . Further down the garden there is a different colour outline ; we go from the amber colouredEremurusto the brightly colored orangeKniphofiaswhich are not exactly subtle but pastel shade get a chip washed out under a July sunlight .
I ca n’t get excited about aKniphofia , indeed I have only recently allowed them into the garden . But I am very frantic about thisDahliawhich I grew from a ‘ Bishop of Llandaff ’ semen It has a lovely streak down the petal and is a gorgeous color .

There are still lovely plants in the front garden . I did n’t get pear-shaped to evince you what it looked like in June , when ( at the risk of sounding like Ruth Draper in her monolgue : The Garden ) , I have to say it was at its best . It does n’t have so much shape and form now and although there is plenty of color , it looks a morsel like coloured hay . Still it is a bungalow garden . I have lots of campanula which I love . Campanula takesimana‘Elizabeth ’ spreads nicely and looks secure with its neighbour a pinkAstrantiaandSalvia x sylvestris‘May Queen’ . Scabious is also a useful flora in the front garden because it seed around and I love its wine colorise flowers . I had blank out that I had plant this delightful garlic relationTulbaghia violaceawith its starry , lilac flowers . I think it is pretty with thePenstemon . Another wizard of the front garden is the Angel ’s Fishing Rod;Dierama pulcherrimum.it is very wanton from seed and flowers in its second year . The substantial wizard of the front garden though is thisRomneya coulterior Californian Tree Poppy . I have tried it before and it has dwindled away . I know that if it is felicitous it will romp away . This is its 2d twelvemonth so perhaps it will stay around this time . I am also delighted with the plants I bought in Crug in May . I get it on Campanulas and any bell shaped flower . This Campanula relationAdenophora remotifoliaBSWJ11016 get along from Japan . You always know that if a plant has a assembling number rather than a name it will be expensive . In fact all the Campanulas are nodding their pretty bell heads . I fuck them all . And as I have called this post ‘ July Blues ’ I shall finish with some grim flower , my favourite colour in the garden . This is the tallCampanula lactiflora ‘ Pritchard ’s Variety’ . On a pocket-sized scale I have the dainty littleCampanula carpaticaedging the path . And the metallic blue stars ofEryngium‘Picos Amethyst’ . Or the sinister blue blue flowers of the virulent poisonousAconitum napellusgrowing with the endearing blue flowers ofAnchusa azurea‘Loddon Royalist ’ ..
So really , as Cathy designate out , there is still so much to enjoy in July ; I have n’t even cite any of the late blossom Clematis that are looking so wonderful at the present moment . They will have to be for another day . I will end with another look at lovelyLilium‘Night Flyer ’ grow with the Monk ’s hood andVeronica spicata .

Regarding the Vita quote and your comment that follows : I did n’t know that others felt that way , too . After tour my garden just now ( early morning here ) and seeing all the rumple lily-livered - brown leaves , i feel very disheartened , but after reading your billet , not so much . remaining to see a “ deep-fried egg plant life ” or “ Matilija ( ma - till - electrical engineering - hah ) poppy ” maturate so well in an English garden . It is a difficult garden plant even here . It grows naturally on very dry , sunny hillside with no summer H2O .
What a peck of really beautiful flowers , eff your Dahlia seedling , so unusual , also your Martagon Lily , I have just the one and it seems to be struggling . Here , the Hemerocallis take over while the roses are meet their strength for a 2nd flush , they make splashes of colour in a few of the bed for a just month along with Crocosmia . I must deadhead my rosiness too , then the rosaceous garden will look a lot neater .
So much colouring .. what ’s not to love?I only realised recently that Lilium martagon is a woodlander . know that I shall be stockpile up . Yours is beautiful , my one and only has buds but has not opened yet . Today I have boldly planted Campanula takesimana in the full knowledge that the slugs were lallygag in their shady hidey holes , watching and just waiting for me to finish . I jazz it so much it ’s deserving yet another go . They wo n’t get it without a conflict .

There ’s a lot to get it on in your garden , Chloris . The mix of reds and blue sky must for certain stir your heart ? However , I hump what you mean by the disillusionment that can set in after the fresh bloom of outflow is gone . I feel it most powerfully when the Agapanthus disappearance – one minute they ’re holding their heads up en masse with the triumph of conquer garden sub and then , suddenly , they appear like wear - out mop - head . While some masses care to leave the spent stalks in place , I favor to cut them down so they do n’t disorder from the blooms that glory in the heat . Smaller in number , there ’s still a destiny to appreciate .
Beautiful pictures Chloris . You have a squeamish aggregation of lilies and there is still some crust in your garden – you just have to search at your Romneya coulteri . Here Campanula takesimana is a thug . I finally decided to get rid of it last year and I see that it is back somewhere else in the garden ( I will keep it this clip , we will see what happens next class . Perhaps ‘ Elizabeth ’ is well behaved !
