Underneath , I have outlined these 3 styles of rationalize in more detail and distinguish the species or intercrossed groups that should be rationalise in a particular elan .
con more about pruning viburnum below .
When To Prune Viburnum
“ Pruning of viburnums is something that one should avoid by all agency , ” plowshare Gary Ladman from Classic Viburnums .
“ There are enough genus Viburnum uncommitted that you should be able to detect one that match the land site rather than pruning to make it fit .
“ Another condition is that viburnums flower on two - year - older Natalie Wood .

“ With continuous pruning , the majority of your branches will consist of one - year wood , resulting in a lack of or less flowering . ”
However , if you have to prune , it is possible .
The chief dominion when it comes to pruning viburnum is that most regular styles of pruning should be done straightaway after the flowering time of year is over .

This is because viburnum forms buds on the old time of year ’s growth and not on the current season ’s emergence , so if you delay pruning to a lucky time of year , it would be too tardy , as the bud will have already formed .
Be aware that the drawback to trim immediately after efflorescence is that you will fall behind some quantity of colorful berries , for which many genus Viburnum varieties are deservedly prized .
1) Pruning For Maintenance
PruningV.plicatum , V.×juddiiand their various cultivars should be limit to only this eccentric of pruning .
As a general rule , V. carlesii , V. tinus , V. opulus , V. davidiiand their cultivars should also be cut in this way , but they may be firmly crop as and when necessary .
All other variety groups may , of course of study , be rationalise in this way in improver to the stylus of pruning described for them .

Dead , discredited , or diseased branches should be pruned .
This is the only case of pruning that may be done at any time of the twelvemonth .
Soon after the efflorescence season , clean-cut , rather than prune , what few too long , untidy or stick out stems there may be .
Cut them just above a node .
2) Annual Pruning
An annual prune is good forV. farreri , V.×bodnantense , V. tinus , V. rhytidophyllumand their several cultivar .
These are especially strong - spring up and vigorous bush and , therefore , are more likely to get out of form , outgrow their space or become overgrown compared with other viburnum eccentric .
Take either or both of the following step as appropriate soon after the flowering season is over .
Trim branches to restrain the shrub from grow out of its allocate blank space and also to exert a pleasing shape .
rationalise up to 1/3 of the branch to 30 - 50 % of their lengths using pruning shears , making the cutting off just above a lymph node .
When trimming , be aware that shrivelled flower will make berries , so you may wish to pick and choose the branch accordingly .
The second step is to prune up to 1/3 of the oldest , most unproductive stems by edit out them at the nucleotide .
utilize a pruning saw or anvil loppers as appropriate .
3) Pruning For Renovation
Many viburnum coinage and their respective cultivars may be hard pruned to renovate them if necessitate .
These areV. farreri , V. opulus , V. davidii , V. carlesii , V. tinus , V.×bodnantenseand their respective cultivar .
If any of these variety of Viburnum are hopelessly overgrown , unkempt or have an copiousness of lanky , straggly stanch , it may be hard pruned to regenerate it .
V. opulus , V. davidiiand their respective cultivar reply particularly well to this mode of pruning .
Renovation pruning is a 2 - class procedure .
Unlike other types of pruning , renovation pruning should be done in spring .
The deciduous mixed bag , such asV. opulusandV.farreri , should be pruned in February to March , whilst the evergreen I , such asV. davidiiandV. tinusare best pruned in March or April .

Do not prune stems from one side or another as the bush will take care unsightly after pruning .
rather , beak and choose stems so as to minimise the negative esthetic impact .
Also , it is desirable to clip a great number of root from the Interior Department or center of the bush in the first year to reset it for an at last pleasing and aesthetic shape .
