As I climbed up those steps and sat into the somewhat comfortable the boot , bouncy seat , I look around at all the gear that I would be managing in this huge machine that somebody entrusted me to take ascendence of .

I felt sort of helpless at first

But as I just closed my centre and thought for a instant , it all come back to me . My husband see that I was anxious , climb up the steps , and we went over it all again . One last time . Finally he rise down and he asked , “ You got this ? ” I unsurely nodded my head , but as I put the combining into gear and backed up in reverse , I started to feel a little more self ascendancy . I motor the combine to the orbit for the very , very first fourth dimension and that feeling still sits on my heart today . For the very first time after 10 age of being a farmer , I was in conclusion sit on the cartel by myself driving to the area , getting quick to cut some soya . And I was SCARED TO demise .

In this post, I’m going to:

– Share my experience so you could learn how topush through your fearsto profit a more fulfilling life . – Give you four measure to attain a way to be involved and include . – Encourage you to keep pushing through those fear you have that can be a vast drawback !

Listen to the Episode:

A Little Bit About Me

I ’m a millennian farmer , entrepreneur and stay at home mamma and now formally a combine number one wood . I ’m going to partake in with you my very first experience scat the combine and cutting soya and how I pushed through that extreme fear I had to keep become . There ’s definitely a lesson for you for how to advertise through your fears . My hubby and I set about farming right out of college but this was the very first time of me sitting in the combine . I ’ve been interested in the process of harvest home but never really jumped on board until now . And I ’ve never been this afraid to try a new caper on the farm than I was driving the cartel . It was definitely a young experience for me I was n’t expecting . I grew up with farm animal and my grandpa grew lucerne and brome .

When I became an Extension agent , that ’s when I kind of got thrown into the crop industry because of where we exist in our sphere of Northeast Kansas . There are very to a great extent craw based farming systems all around us . There ’s not a lot of pasture . If you drive around Northeast Kansas , you ’ll see a vast array of crop farm , not so much livestock . So it ’s sort of ironic that I would get thrown in as an at new Extension federal agent , where I was supposed to be an expert . I did learn a LOT and I was capable to help many farmers by helping them find the correct resources they take to be able to run their farm better . But when it came to our own farm crop , I stay on home .

I Went Through Every Emotion A Farm Wife Goes Through

Over the past several yr I ’ve seen a mass of farm wives and RO women spill about being harvest widows . And I say that with quote fingers . I have felt that direction too . I felt that direction very first few old age because I did n’t desire anything to do with harvest time . And I went through a lots of unlike emotions . Some of which you may have had being a farm wife if you are one or just kind of being leave on the avocation during harvesting . I ’ve felt raging , sorry , alone , frightened and happy all at through the years ! But loneliness more than anything . And I ’ve been staying home with our kids and the livestock up until a few years ago when something labour me to start asking . I ’m not gon na lie down and my married man and I have spill the beans about this – I entirely did n’t understand harvest at all . I did n’t understand how easy it was that combines broke down , how you had to hold back for a certain time , certain moisture to even cut .

But as I started actually listening and learning more , I started asking more . I started to understand a small routine more about what ’s in reality go into all of this . There ’s just a lot of factors . Until you actually take the time to watch and actually ask questions and not get mad , you ’re not going to know on the nose what ’s snuff it on there . Listen and be patient . understand how thing work is buy the farm to be the first gradation in learning how to push through your fear . So I want to share my story with you so that you’re able to also lie with how to crusade through your fears . Also , I need to give you some hopefully tips that ’ll help you to get off the by-line yourself and peradventure become more mired in whatever your farm crop might expect like .

I Felt A Strong Need To Be In The Field

So I start wanting to be more involved in the farming was when I started my clientele and started to find a fiddling more determination . I was being a little more happy with myself , kind of emerging out of my postpartum clinical depression after stimulate my Thomas Kyd . I started to palpate a little more happy with animation and the life that I was living out here . And on the other side of that , my husband started call for me to rag along . Now you have to understand that the combine he has used is very pocket-size . It ’s an 850 Massey Ferguson . An 850 Massey is very small , has no buddy hindquarters . So when I twit along I have to stand beside him while he combines in the cab . So it ’s like we ’re in a small box . We ’re very , very close quarters . I’m basically on top of him without being on top of him and riding around like that for hour . It ’s skillful for the first hr or so . But after that it ’s a little bit uncomfortable .

I ’m not going to lie very uncomfortable . So I kind of begin tease him for a adult tractor , you know , not a new one , but peradventure like a newer one that would have , that would be big and have a chum seat . And this has gone on for a couple long time now . Do you know what he did ? or else of amaze a new cartel with a pal , see for me to devolve on along in , he goes and buys me my own combine .

I Never Thought I Would Ever Run The Combine

As an Ag Extension Agent , I only saw harvest time from a length . And when I would ride in the combines with the Fannie Farmer , I would follow and take questions about the system and and that and go to workshops and tried to learn all I could about it . So for seven twelvemonth I did learn about cropping systems of corn and soybean and cut across cropping systems and all of that character of hooey . But when I was home , my husband would go to the airfield during harvest and I would just stay home because I really had not that much pursuit . I honestly , I did n’t think that the cropping side would be for me . I was VERY HAPPY riding along .

You experience , I ’m a livestock missy , I feed the livestock side of our business and the garden side . But I never thought that I would be the one running a machine cutting our harvest . But to be reliable with you , I was find that solitariness that many of you finger when you ’re left behind . And that ’s where you feel like the { hashtag digit quote } crop widow woman . I know that touch and that ’s why I was both ecstatic AND frightened to become a bigger part of harvest with my own combine . But … my first instinct of concern was to say NO .

“ narrate me and I leave , teach me and I remember involve me and I learned . ”

How to Push Through Your Fears to Gain a More Fulfilling Life

I Didn’t Want Anything To Do With My New Combine.

At first I expect him : “ Why in the Earth would you do that ? ” And he ’s like , “ Well now you could run your own combine and go powerful along with me . ”At first at my first thought was , Oh , I ca n’t , I ca n’t do that . I do n’t have the experience to do that . There ’s no way . There ’s no path that I will ever be able to , to take to the woods my own combine . No manner ever . Well , that was last fall , decent after harvest get over his , when he bought this new combine for me and over the winter he kept teasing me . He kept saying : “ You have to go see your combine . Your combine is not go to know you . You get ta go see your combine . ” But I refused to go see the corporate trust .

I did n’t want anything to do with the corporate trust . But time heals your pith and I truly believe that God drive you in the right direction of where you ’re supposed to go . And I believe that He is behind all of this madness of me have my own trust . I go for that you ’ve found situation yourself in situations like this where you just express joy , but it all sort of play out in the end . But I ’m break down to be quite honorable with you , even to this bit here , I ’m sitting here scared to demise of that combine .

My First Experience as a Combine Driver Wasn’t Easy

The day before we began harvest , I catch my combining ready with the assistance of my hubby and thankfully the trust was in really good shape . It did n’t taken that much extra meter to get a 2d combining ready to go . The first day of harvest , we did really well . There were no problems – just heart – and we were over halfway done with beans the first day . But the 2nd daytime I was faced with some challenges . I catch into some really , good beans and I gravel to lead a petty too fast I think . And to make a long storey light , the combine finish up plugging on the interior of the head . And I did n’t catch it until it was a minuscule bit too recently . So I put it in a neutral , got out and endeavor to disconnect it . And it was very , very , very plug like book beyond like beyond .

There was no mode that I was die to get it unplugged . I worked for a while with it . But I was done cutting for the day and I was so mad because we were doing really well . We only had a few more patches to go . And we here in Northeast Kansas , we produce with the terraces . We combined the terraces and then we flux the patches around in between . And so I was really , really frustrated and I thought my husband was going to be brainsick that I plugged it so bad .

I Was Afraid My Husband Would Be Angry and Fire Me.

But , he was very understanding and said it happens . He reassure me he plugged combines lots of times and he also say that his first time running the combining did not go well either . So that made me feel a footling scrap better too , that all I have is time . Not only did I punch the combine , but one of the chains broke also . That ’s going to take to be fixed . This is one thing I ’m going to try on to do myself without my husband ’s help . So overall my combine experience for the first prison term , if I were to give it a tier , I would give it probably a B just because it did go pretty well and I feel so empower after doing is . I finger scared to expiry , but I still find empowered .

But not only do I feel empowered , but I feel very tangled . But it just takes time as my husband put it . He ’s had 10 days of experience running the trust and I had two days and I ca n’t guess my whole experience on the retiring two day . I finger a circle more mired than I ever have before with the farm , helping with the harvest side . All because I showed pastime and gave my hubby a little push to get me more involved in that too . He believed in me and really mistreat out to and was an amazing instructor . I have him to thank for my next success as a combine driver .

I Could’ve Just Quit

But I did n’t . And I won’t . I’ve discourse a few failures that I encountered in my first two day of my first harvest with the header plug away and the power range of mountains breaking . I also had some trouble how low-pitched to the earth to keep the head while cut . My old bean head does not have a sensor and so I had to be really thrifty with all the pelting we ’ve gotten over the preceding summer . We had a pot of ditches where it washed out and I had to be really heedful with those ditches . Along with that , I pulled something in my right manus . Along with moving the lintel up and down , my correct hand is so dead from gripping that handle . There ’s the handle that impress the combine back and forth and it also moves the head up and down . To make a retentive tale short , I had a destruction handgrip on that handle cause I was so dang nervous . Still today , I ca n’t grip a pencil . It ’s in a circle of like numbing pain sensation today . I hope it does n’t produce a further trouble down the route . I ’m extend it and fray it . Hopefully I can get some flavor back in that pretty before long .

I really fought and I felt like quitting halfway through just because it just seemed like I could n’t , I did n’t feel comfortable with it . I did n’t get it right . It was a huge struggle and I felt like I did n’t desire to be there at all and that was n’t the right position to have . I do n’t know if it would have helped too , to just intercept and take a breather , but I just kept going even though I was so afraid that I was gon na mess up . I was so afraid between the fear and the inexperience that I have , it just kind of overtook me .

Even though it made me really mad . I ’m really at peace today think that was he his paw in that , too . Overall , it was n’t a hugely bad experience and it only require to go up from there . I’ve been asked before what makes a successful farm fly the coop smoothly and a lot of people would reply : Good records , in effect books , of course good reason , good equipment , you know , maybe all of those thing . But to be completely honest and fair , I really truly trust that happiness is the underlie bowlder that really helps farm go swimmingly and to be felicitous .

The Happiest People Are The Most Successful

I believe the main factors that help hoi polloi stay sane is their team . Everybody being on the same page , good communication . But along with that , the willingness of everyone on the team to learn and be included . We have a huge squad because not only is it just my married man and I , but we have two fiddling girls as well . And obviously they do n’t ride in the tractors and combines in the field because we do n’t have a buddy seat . It ’s not safe for them . So we do leave our girls with his parent a raft when we ’re harvesting . If we do n’t have a babysitter , one of us has to just take a clip out and stay home or be there at the farm learn and making certain everything ’s going well . You know , taking turns . It ’s , it ’s a glad medium .

That ’s why I rightfully say that communication , teamwork , the willingness to make sacrifice is what really , really make for a successful farm . You have it off you could have the good farm reason in the whole United States and you’re able to have the estimable equipment – the skilful of everything . But if you do n’t have good team under you or well Quaker , kinsfolk to support , you are going to be a wretched mess . It ’s go to be hard for you to see how to tug through your fear . And along with that team is all of your crop adviser , your indemnity provider , whatever it takes for you to grow the crop , a source salesman , all of that – it ’s gon na be a concentrated road if you do n’t have your squad . So that ’s why I tell people happiness , happiness is the key .

Because I was so unhappy for so long when I first moved here , I did n’t really have a purpose yet . But I did n’t have my position and now I feel wholly fulfilled . And it ’s a really , really great impression to find that place . Along with that , I have , I have such a vision for growing everything that we have and that growth of the farm is what ’s gon na make our farm successful . So about the underlying factor of all of that is , is felicity , of track . That ’s why I always say happiness . And you’re able to achieve that once you get word how to push through your fears .

How to Become More Involved in the Farm

So what is in this for you ? Okay . So I want to encourage everybody listen today to get call for . If you already are , that ’s great . So , I require to live how you are involved . What is your job on your farm , whether on the craw side or maybe there ’s a side that you are n’t postulate with yet . Can you let me have it off ?

So numeral one is to show pastime because maybe you have other the great unwashed involved in the farm , such as some in - law or peradventure some owners if you ’re renting . I do n’t know what your situation is , but perhaps there ’s other people involved and that ’s perhaps the understanding why you have n’t puzzle convoluted . But I desire to encourage you to take that opportunity that you are called to become interested in . The first stone’s throw is to show interest and show up . I jazz for age my husband was always read : “ you never come over . You do n’t have any interest in this . You never even come over and take in . ”And that was kind of my first glimmer that he really does want me there . I guess I thought he does n’t need me around during harvesting . I feel in my centre that I ’d just be in the way . And that ’s honestly , I think what I felt , and I think that ’s what a lot of you feel too . But if you take an involvement and show up , that ’s , that ’s really what they require . That ’s a big step in learning how to push through your fears . They , they may never say it , but that is what they want . They want you there , they enjoy your ship’s company . And mayhap mayhap bring them a bite and , and be like , Hey , can I ride along or can I watch ?

Number two is to watch and learn . We ’re going right into it . Keep your eyes open and really pay up attention . You know , if you just show up and you ’re on your phone all the time or take a catnap in the hand truck or whatever , you ’re not paying tending and you ’re not gon na know . But if you really look on and really soak it all in , pay off attention , that is going to aid you move on to the next pace a circle more quicker . You ’re going to feel the motive to necessitate questions . That ’s number three .

How to Push Through Your Fears to Gain a More Fulfilling Life

take up asking questions . And that ’s kind of where I got thrown into the combine because I started asking , “ Oh , how does this mold ? What , why do you do do it that way ? ” And you know , he became more of a instructor character . He start think , well peradventure she would be really unspoilt at combining . So maybe I just need to get her her own . So I really think that was his thought process there , which is crazy . It ’s still crazy to me . But you acknowledge , in five years it wo n’t be as unbalanced , but it is right now . And then lastly , when you do get that job , just keep learning how to push through your fears .

No matter how much you fail , no matter how many tire you muck up , how many headers you stop up , how many chains you break . Keep going , keep doing it . I wanted to quit five times on the 2d day of combining and something pushed me to keep break , keep going , do not quit . And at the end of the Clarence Shepard Day Jr. I told my married man , “ I really do n’t call back that I ’m dependable at this . ” And he said , “ I was n’t good the first time either . But it just takes prison term and you just got ta acquire how to push through your veneration . You just got to keep doing it . ”

I ’m going to fix the chain and get the combine ready for the next round . I ’m perish to move on , agitate it off , get my blockheaded skin on and keep going because that is how you become good to neat . Keep going , keep learning how to press through your fears , keep your middle open and push on . Now I know you as a Ruralite and a farm woman , that low township gal that is so smart and so courageous , I know that you’re able to do it too . Nothing ever cracking was ever perfect and beau ideal comes at a cost and the serious things in liveliness come to those who are willing to put in the time . That ’s what I ’m encouraging you to do is to put in the time , once I master the art of combination , I expect my husband to teach me how to persist the metric grain truck . Our texture hand truck seems really complicated and that scare me even more than the combine and it scar him too . That ’s why he has not taught me yet . But I recollect that that ’s next on my bucket list – to learn how to drive the grain truck and to get really good at that as well .

How to Push Through Your Fears to Gain a More Fulfilling Life

To discover what make you felicitous . To learn how to push through your fears . Being with my husband during harvest makes me glad . Getting my own combine terrorize me , but deeply down I was really unrestrained that he was uncoerced to countenance me be a giving part of harvesting . And while my first experience on that combining was n’t 100 % great or perfect , it was my first step in being really good at unite . And I want to further you to find that in your aliveness , on your farm or whatever it is that you strain to do and your journey . Start today go on how to push through your concern .
