Warning

Do not cut off the top of an evergreen plant . cut the top issue the tree diagram to decay and can grow and unsightly emergence pattern .

Scots pine , scientific name Pinus sylvestris , is a cone-bearing evergreen . rise in northern Europe , this fragrant evergreen was brought to North America where it is called Scotch pine tree and is customarily used for Christmas trees . Prune Scots true pine like other pine trees to keep the tree healthy , but perform additional pruning if the desire is to make a conical shape favored for Christmas trees .

Pruning Process

Step 1

Prune long heavy branches by making three cut with a tree pruning saw for branches greater than one inch in diameter . The first two cuts are to quash the amount of weight on the branch by taking off the outer fate . Make the first shorten midway through the underside of the branch about 12 inches from the luggage compartment . Make the 2d cut through the topside of the branch about an column inch to the outside of the first cut . The outside portion of the limb will then come off . Make the third cut at a 45 - point slant just outside the branch collar ( ridge that variant between the branch and the trunk of the tree diagram ) .

Step 2

Prune smaller branch with the pruners or loppers , depending on the diameter of the deletion .

Step 3

Cut high-pitched branches using a rod trimmer / power saw .

Young Scots Pine

Prune Scots pine tree after it has been planted to remove branch that cross over other leg or to dispatch new growth that would become crowded because of larger subsist outgrowth . practice pruner to make the gash at about a 45 - degree slant on the outside of the branch neckband .

Cut the loss leader ( the eminent upward tip ) of a small Scots pine so it is about 10 inches long . If this is not done when the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree is plant , wait until late winter to coalesce this pruning with other pruning .

Look at the branches around the top of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree . They should be thin out so they are about 5 in shorter than the leader .

Step 4

Continue down the exterior of the tree diagram , pruning the branches to make a conical physical body . After you prune Scots pine , the space between the whorls will be shorter as the tree grows , give the tree a full appearance . A whorl is make up of 3 to 6 branches around the trunk of the tree diagram , all at about the same level .

Step 5

exert the conical shape as the tree diagram grows by shearing every year ( cut back just the confidential information that extend out ) if involve .

Damage or Disease Care

Cut out confused or dead offshoot as they occur . Dead limb are obvious for the lack of acerate leaf .

Cut diseased limb when the weather is teetotal . Make the baseball swing in a healthy area about 6 inch from the diseased surface area . Disease may show evidence of tiny hole , live louse or drops of blanched resin .

Dip the cutter in alcohol or bleach after each cutting when removing diseased limb .
