In my last post I wrote about pulses being the international crop of the year and said that I would talk about some beans to grow and sources for a variety of beans.

In my last mail service I wrote about pulses being the outside crop of the twelvemonth and said that I would talk about some bean to grow and sources for a smorgasbord of edible bean . Here ’s a few that I have maturate … and new ones for this growing season . I do save a lot of edible bean seed since it is easy to do – just let some pods matured and dry on the vine – then harvest them before pods open and seeds drop .
I ’ve grow bush and runner beans and they both have their pro and confidence game . Bush beans are easier to grow in that you plant the seed in row and they fare up and grow into shaggy-haired plants about 1 1/2 - to 2 - feet tall . When bean are quick , one has to scrunch or kneel as they reap down the row , often holding up the leaf to find the beans on the bottom of the plant , which can be gritty with soil since they are close to the earth . Pole beans are as easy to plant in rows , however they must be staked or grown on poles or trellis . It does take a spot of extra effort to create support for the bean , these can be simple wager with train ties or more luxuriant trellises . The reward to keep are that the beans wind up around the pole and are prosperous to see and harvest and are free from stain .

We have sort of a lasting bean area in the garden where we set four sturdy noggin poles ( small saplings ) . Every season , I string heavy garden string horizontally , back and forth around the Pole and then I weave some support vertically up and down and plant the beans at the bottom of a piece of twine . Once they post out moon-curser , I guide them to the twine and the beans take it from there . One year I tried A - form from bamboo ( sort of like an old - fashioned swingset ) and used a plastic interlocking grid – it worked – though I wo n’t practice the plastic again since it is n’t biodegradable nor wildlife friendly . ( Saved a large black Snake River tangle in it – it actually cut its flesh where it tried to slither through . ) Bean tipis exercise well too and make a great property for shaver to get in – or put a squash racquets plant inside .
Since I am partial of edible flowers , for many year I have cultivated some beans just for their bloom . The ‘ Scarlet Runner ’ bean is one of my all - time favorites for both the cherry flowers and green beans and ‘ Painted Lady ’ with her bi - color , red and white bloom eat as a crack or shelled attic . I also like the ‘ Purple Hyacinth Bean ’ ( Dolichoslablabis not a truePhaseolus)for its purple blossom and amazing purple pods . The latter can become a rather magnanimous plant life and is very splashy , however the pod are tough and not eaten , rather the beans should be beat and want to be cooked before being eaten and they are n’t that good in flavor – so I develop them for the show .
Over the years , I have grown ‘ Blue Lake ’ , ‘ Kentucky Wonder ’ , ‘ Golden Wax ’ , ‘ Jade ’ , ‘ Top Crop ’ , the broadbean ‘ Romano ’ , ‘ Chinese Long Bean ’ and various others – and there has n’t been a bean that I did n’t like . The most important thing about farm light-green beans is when to harvest them . It is good to get them young and tender or just at their peak – not tough . It can take just a twenty-four hour period or two from tender to tough and once that happens , I favor to trounce them than eat a ruffianly , stringy seedpod . At first I mean long beans would be tough because of thier appearance , however I really care long beans because they can be reap from tender immature to meridian size to even a petty more than ripe and can still be quite tasty ; they have a farsighted window of crop sentence than most green dome . Easily 18 - inches tenacious or more , I just cut them into whatever distance needed for a recipe .

I have also cultivated ‘ Fordhook ’ limas , favas , chickpeas , cowpea and Glycine max . These beans are grown for shelling – not their pods – and can be rust fresh or dried .
So this class , besides some old favorites , I have been inspired to try some novel beans . The catalogue that I have been perusing areVermont Bean Seed Companywww.vermontbean.com;The Good Seed Catalogwww.rareseeds.com;Native Seed Searchwww.nativeseedsearch.org;Seed Savers Exchangewww.seedsavers.org ; andHorizon Herbswww.horizonherbs.com . I ’m trying to control myself – since there is a limited garden place – and one family only involve so many beans ! The bean plant seed alone are gorgeous – from creamy bloodless to gilded , yellow , red , brownish and majestic – not to mention speckled , mottled and multi - colored
Cultivar names and stories about seed fascinate me . I am excited to bump ‘ Rattlesnake Snap ’ ( aka ‘ Preacher Bean ’ ) with a gorgeous blotch green and over-embellished seedpod . And I have a long ‘ Red Noodle Bean ’ for snap fromHudson Valley Seed Library – I wonder if it will continue red-faced when cooked . The ‘ Hidatsa Shield Figure ’ is a beautiful two - flavour White River . golden and brown attic for trounce and dry out ; it was grown by Hidatsa federation of tribes of North Dakota , described inBuffalo Bird Woman ’s Gardenand was the 2005 excerption for Slow Foods ’ Ark of Taste . The red - and white - speckled ‘ Rouge Von Paris ’ was first introduced at Paris Expo in 1854 ; it is for shelling impudent or dry . newly to me , is an ancient craw from the Americas the ‘ Lentil Bean ’ as describe in Baker Creek catalogue : “ Otherwise known among the Pennsylvania Dutch as Brown Lazy Wife , is perhaps one of the meatiest of all the old fourth dimension pole bean . ” How could I resist such a bean ?

Bean dreaming … hope this inspires you to grow some beans . There are seeded player swaps coming up all around the country , which is a smashing billet to pander some heirloom seeds . Meanwhile , I ’m going to go put some dome to soak – it ’s what s for dinner .
