Most everyone has heard of bonsai, but did you know about its Chinese predecessor?
Hi GPODers !
It ’s been a instant since we ’ve heard from frequent contributor and booster - of - the - web log , Cherry Ong . If you ’re new to Garden Photo of the Day , you ’ll want to mark off out her mythic side garden dubbed the “ Fern Fairway”:The Fern Fairway in Summer , Fall in the Fern Fairway , Winter at the Fern Fairway . Then explore some of her incredible wreaths , arrangements , and container : Container Creativity in British Columbia , Container Crevice Garden , Wreath Making with Cherry , Make a DIY Christmas Wreath . ultimately , tour across Canada via her many travels to unbelievable secret and public garden : Where ’s Cherry ? Tofino Botanical Gardens , GPOD on the Road : Garden Tour With Cherry , GPOD on the route : Niagara - on - the - Lake , GPOD on the Road : Allan Gardens Conservatory .
In distinctive Cherry fashion , she has spent the summer travel and visiting beautiful gardens that she so graciously shares with us . Today and tomorrow , she ’s taking us toMontreal Botanical Gardenand it ’s sereneChinese Garden . First , a look at the special plantings in the Springtime Courtyard ( Le Cour du Printemps ) , crafted with an ancient proficiency .

These are not bonsai !
This space , ringed with an undulating wall resemble a flying dragon ’s back , is meet withpenjings , miniature landscapes growing in container . These dwarfed trees are the forerunner of Japanese bonsai , but they differ from bonsai chiefly in that they present nature in a realistic , non - idealized fashion . Their branches and root are snip to copy the metier , hardiness and elegance of trees grow in the wild .
The Montreal Botanical Garden ’s penjing appeal dwell in the main of 350 miniature trees donated to Montreal by the city of Shanghai to strike off the Floralies Internationles guard here in 1980 .

I love Cherry ’s description of these ornate bulwark as “ a dragon ’s back ” . Paired with the intricate gemstone body of work on the flooring and the abstract bod of stone structure , the place is full of fascinating textures that give the feeling of movement .
What I ’m already appreciate about penjing is the elbow room these trees attend as if they ’ve been ripped from their natural habitat and shrunk down to board - top size . Nepal firethorn ( Pyracanthacrenulata , Zones 5–8 ) get naturally in barren and rocky landscape , so the miniature Harlan Stone and minimum growing material on this peach is actually its pure home ground .
The use of a figure with this Taiwanese elmwood ( Ulmus parvifolia , Zones 5–9 ) also helps to paint a shot and bring the miniature landscape to life .

I also be intimate that each penjing is dead unparalleled , no two can be confused . A true representation of nature and the individualism of all living things . This Taiwanese hackberry ( Celtis sinensis , Zones 7–9 ) could be develop to face similar to the Chinese elm above , but its three separate trunks give it a clearly different look .
Just getting a peek at the many other penjing on video display , you may see so many different form and form .
While undoubtable a high spot , penjings are n’t the only thing to see in the court . All types of plant native to China can be love .

Of naturally , several plants native to Asia , like this Nipponese stiltgrass ( Microstegium vimineum ) , are extremely invading in North America . Having these plants confined and monitored in a botanical garden stage setting grant visitors to delight and appreciate them without the damage that they can cause in our landscape painting .
And , as already remark , the computer architecture and hardscaping are also elements worthy of marveling .
justly down to the implausibly detailed stone employment you walk on .

As I said in the presentation , we ’ll be exploring the Chinese Garden atMontreal Botanical Gardenwith Cherry again tomorrow . We ’ll be incite out of the courtyard and unagitated Dream Lake Garden , so be certain to keep an optic out !
