After a rough start, this garden pulled through
Today we ’re visiting with Kim Herdman , in Williams Lake , British Columbia , Canada , who has had a unmanageable gardening year . Fortunately , many of the plant managed to rend through and perform anyway .
This year was again a serial of challenges in the garden . We had a cold springtime with belated frosts . There were quite a few nights that I had to go out and put pots on top of thedahliasand maybe one or two night when I got take by surprise . So now here in September they are still deny to spread out , and some never even grew .
We had a mates of workweek of normal weather , and the garden bounce into gloriole . Theforget - me - nots(Myosotis sylvatica , Zones 3–8 ) were witching — then almost overnight they looked raggedy and had to be pulled .

Then when the roses were full to bursting with buds and thepeonieswere fat and delicious , we had the heat noodle ! The temperature soared to over 44 ° C ( 111 ° F ) , and the roses either electrocute to a crisp when they opened or the flowers open and were done in a day . The paeony fried , and the lily that were in bud fried . The only area that seemed to be capable to manage were in the shade oftrees or shrubs . I endeavor to shade things , but it was fairly hopeless .
After the heat dome , the temperature were still in the high XXX Celsius ( over 95 ° atomic number 9 ) , and then we got wildfire smoking , which darkened the sky . Ash cover leaves and flowers . We could not put enough H2O into the earth . We longed for rain . We got it ! It occur in the form of a severe violent storm . Not only did it pour , but it rained hail the sizing of nickels and in some illustration even quarters !
Anything with a big leaf was rip up , thetomatoeswere broken , and any yield was knocked off or had holes pounded into them . The deep-fried lily buds were now clobber with holes , and any in flower were shredded . The heat stay on , as well asdrought , and our meter in the garden basically was wandering around with a watering can or hosiery sample to keep thingswatered .

And then things recover , and amazingly the fried and battered lilies even flower !
Later summer blossom thrive , despite the rough start .
I had the energy and time to do a piffling remodeling in the garden . Sometimes things seem like a right idea at the time . This class understandably show me that adjustment want to be made to grapple with climate modification . I made the planting blank space bigger and dig up a Pyrus communis tree diagram from the backyard to tender shade in the hot front garden . The tree will also help with traffic noise and hopefully with the exhaust from idling cars .

The summertime garden full of bloom
And despite the hail , the tomatoes grow as well !
