Garden projects to get through the cold, rainy months

It ’s almost that time of the class again when there ’s relentless rainwater , cold and prolonged dark . I can never get quite used to the darkness and the gray , so I depend to gardening labor even through the dusty calendar month . Holiday embellish does soothe my soul to some academic degree , and last year was no exclusion .

I recycle theSenecio candicans‘Angel Wings ’ ( Zones 8–10 or as an annual ) from my fall baskets , engraft them on the invertebrate foot ofCupressus arizonicavar.glabra‘Blue Ice ’ ( Zones 6–9 ) , and tucked in some cuttings fromCallicarpa bodinieri‘Profusion ’ ( Zones 6–8 ) .

Though it ’s a diminutive bush , I never tire of seeingSkimmia japonica‘Magic Marlot ’ ( Zones 6–8 ) in all its winter resplendence .

I used a combination of store - bought and homegrown slip to produce this window loge arrangement . It ’s squeamish to have such a view while washing dish in the kitchen .

I made this door wreath last winter with a combination of store - bought and homegrown green , an antler I found in an antique entrepot many years ago , reused pinecones from previous years , and foragedbirchbranches .

Here is one of the handmade evergreen pillage I gave away as gifts to sept and friends .

A decorated urn greets visitor by the front room access . I added a hoary firmament for stature and some art .

I really jazz the soma ofCorokia(Zones 7–10 ) and used it for a short fourth dimension as a houseplant . I made the wreath from Olea europaea branch and shock absorber bush from summer containers and wire the tillandsia in place . These small chaplet made great gifts for family and friends who survive in condos where bylaws prohibit evergreen wreaths and prize on front doors .

One of the most welcome fragrance in the dead of wintertime is sweetbox(Sarcococca , Zones 7–9 ) . Ours are getting quite expectant . Any suggestions on when and how to prune them without sacrificing the blossom and yield ? I prune them as needed , but somehow I think there is a smarter style of doing this .

This is part of my zone denial . I will dishes of dauntless succulents out all wintertime . Semps(Sempervivium , Zones 4–9 ) are wonderful , but I have to admit that some of the century plant have succumbed to the weather . ThisAgave parryi(mom and pup ; this is one of the larger puppy ) has weathered several winters .
