We give thanks for the garden bounty and the farmers' markets for local organic produce and to the farmers everywhere for growing our food.

The cold atmospheric condition is upon us and it makes all of us want to move indoors , turn inwards , and eat hearty thawing winter foods . It is also a time of feed with friends and family unit celebrate holidays from Thanksgiving to wintertime solstice , Hanukkah , Kwanzaa , Christmas , New Year ’s and more . Hopefully you have gathered , or are design too , the late garden bounteousness before it is zapped by the hoarfrost or freezing weather . Look for root vegetables , winter squash and pumpkins , brassicas , dark leafy green , testicle , apples , pears , persimmon , and cranberries at your local Farmer ’ grocery and roadside stands - they can be purchased now and if stored in cool conditions - you could eat these brave vegetables , fruits and junky through the cold weather into spring . I stash away my winter veggies and fruits in a cold room in my cellar ; a cool garage or even a crisper drawer in the fridge will crop also .

ancestor vegetables , as well as crush , and pumpkins , are a part of my winter repertoire for soups , lather , gratins , side dishes , salads , and desserts . My favorite elbow room to organize any of these vegetable is simply make fun with a bit of olive vegetable oil , salt and newly priming coat pepper in the oven . This method of preparation showcases their simple , toothsome , earthy sugariness . Once guy , they can be eaten as is , or made into fantastic soup , purees , salads , not to observe used in lettuce , cooky , scone and bar batters , pie woof and puddings or flan .

Now is the fourth dimension to look for freshly dug potato , sweet murphy , turnips , parsnips , carrots , beets , Brassica napus napobrassica , and celery root and declination - harvested winter squeeze and pumpkins . veg should be steady to the touch with no dark or soft spots . Leafy super C like loot , chard , blowball , cress , collard , beet or turnip greens , Spinacia oleracea should be crisp and vibrant - not limp or wilted – these should be stored in the electric refrigerator and used as before long as possible . Seasonal fruit like pear and apples , if firm and gratis of blemishes , will keep in cold storage for a few months . cranberry will hold in the crisper draftsman of the electric refrigerator for a few weeks ; freeze for longer storage .
