Working on the small backyard of a Victorian town house in San Francisco ’s Noe Valley neighborhood , landscape painting architectChristopher Yatescreated a minimalist distance complete with a dining area and built - in barbeque . The tradition COR - TEN - steel barbecue ledge was climb on a concrete wall , beside an herb plantation owner and above an ipe - woods deck . A small amount of vividness added to the paving gives the space a slightly warmer tone , and low - maintenance , drought - tolerant succulents , Gunter Grass and restios surround the dining area .

Q : What were your customer ’ objectives ?

A : They want a minimalist garden that nevertheless met their living and entertaining need : a dining area large enough for six to eight the great unwashed , a work up - in barbeque , a strong roadblock wall on the attribute job , a caper area and sandbox for their newborn infant , and a bench for the client bungalow .

Q : What are the kitchen ’s principal features ?

A : The ‘ kitchen ’ is really just a build - in barbecue — it is essentially a COR - TEN - sword box that is mounted on the concrete wall at the dimension line , with a custom concrete countertop and a unstained - brand countertop barbeque . Of naturally , there is also the adjacent dining blank .

Q : Where is the barbecue send within the context of the garden ?

A : It ’s centrally situate — designed to be close to the kitchen in the main mansion and just off - center from the outdoor dining table .

Q : Were there any challenges with space or installation ? If so , how did you clear them ?

A : This is a very lowly garden , and infinite was highly compressed . The challenge was to make the space feel large than its genuine size and still take on the client ’s goals . Thus , the barbeque was design as a cantilevered unit that required minimal space ( only 2 pes deep ) , and with the 2 - substructure - wide plantation owner on either side of the barbeque , the unit floats above the planter .

Q : What brand of contraption did you use ?

A : We used the 30 - inchFire MagicDeluxe Countertop Grille , as this was the only manufacturing business we could find with a countertop unit that would check our coating .

Q : Were there any extra elements that you customized or retrofit to work for this outdoor kitchen design ?

A : We rank a custom COR - TEN - steel herbaceous plant planter adjacent to the barbecue ; it ’s design for ease of access while cooking .
